How do I choose a doula?

You will probably want to consider talking to several different doulas to find the right person for your needs and desires for your birth. To find a compatible doula, you might consider asking the following questions:

  • What training have you had?
  • What credentials have you earned? Which organization did you go through?
  • Tell me (us) about your experience with birth, personally and as a doula.
  • What do your services include?
  • When and where do you usually join women in labor?
  • What types of comfort measures do you offer?
  • Do you work with a backup doula? May we meet her?
  • What is your fee?
  • Do you have references?
You can obtain the names and phone numbers of several doulas by visiting our "find a doula" pages linked above.

Fees will vary based on experience and services offered. However, no woman will be denied labor support due to inability to pay.
